Have You Been Injured?

There are at least 70 to 80 million pet dogs across the United States according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), and countless more stray dogs roaming the streets. While we hope that our furry friends never bare their fangs at us, there’s always a risk that these animals could turn aggressive and attack an unsuspecting passerby. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that dogs bite approximately 4.5 million people every single year in the United States, and about one out of every five bites become infected.

At The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C., our NYC personal injury attorneys have spent the past 40+ years successfully representing clients suffering from serious injuries. Over that time, we have recovered over half a billion dollars in settlements and verdicts, and our team of legal professionals continues to pride themselves on the skilled, knowledgeable, and compassionate representation they provide.

Taking Care of a Bite

If a dog bit you, the first thing to do is seek medical attention. No matter how severe the bite, you need to exchange contact information with the dog’s owner to make sure their animal is up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations. If you were bitten by a stray dog, notify animal control and seek medical attention immediately. Depending on the severity of the bite, you may be able to administer a home remedy to take care of the wound.

Dog bite levels of severity are as follows:

Minor Bite

  • Disinfect the affected area with soap and water.
  • Apply an antibacterial cream to the site.
  • Use a clean bandage to cover the injury.
  • Signs of infection may include swelling, redness, pain, or excess warmth radiating from the area.

Serious Bite

  • Apply pressure to the injury with a clean and dry cloth.
  • Call 911 if you begin to feel faint or weak, or if the bleeding doesn’t stop within a few minutes.

In many situations, a serious injury that becomes infected can require amputation if it spreads past the point of treatment.
