The Zadroga Act

Helping 9/11 Victims Get the Medical Care They Need

The dangers of asbestos exposure are well-known. When breathed in, asbestos fibers can cause not only conditions like asbestosis, but it can also lead to lung cancer or mesothelioma. With an average life expectancy for a mesothelioma patient at less than 18 months, this diagnosis can be devastating.

Unfortunately, many great heroes were exposed to asbestos as a result of the collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers on 9/11. Providing for individuals exposed on 9/11 is something that our nation owes to people who stepped up to help during the city’s time of need. Fortunately, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health Compensation Act makes it possible for victims to get care for health problems and compensation for losses.

The Perecman Firm, has helped many people with 9/11-related conditions file appropriate legal claims for benefits available to them through the Zadroga Act and we can assist you, too.

What Is the Zadroga Act?

The Zadroga Act was signed into law January 2, 2011. It makes continued federal funds available for healthcare programs designed to provide treatment for victims affected by the events of September 11, 2001. The Act also reopens the Victims Compensation Fund, which makes monetary benefits available to people who were hurt or to family members who lost loved ones as a result of the attacks or their aftermath.

The four primary programs that treat health problems resulting from asbestos include:

  • The World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program, which provides care to first responders.
  • The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation WTEC Environmental Health Canter, which provides care to survivors.
  • The Fire Department of New York Responder Health Program, which provides care for personnel from the New York Fire Department.
  • The WTC Health Program, which is a national network of clinics that make specialized medical treatment available for survivors and responders who move out of the NYC metropolitan area.

These programs ensure that free medical services are available and provided by trained professionals who know how to deal with the illnesses that 9/11 caused. The Zadroga Act also reopens the Victims Compensation Fund to new applications, expanding eligibility, and allowing more victims who were harmed to collect compensation. Victims must waive their rights to sue if they receive money from the Compensation Fund, but may still be able to receive workers’ compensation benefits.
