Asbestos Exposure on a Regular Basis May Lead to Illness

Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals found in the environment that can be separated into threads. These fibers were used in building materials and vehicles because of their resistance to heat, fire, and chemicals. Asbestos was later found to be a human carcinogen — a cancer-causing agent. People who develop asbestos-related cancers have been regularly exposed to the fibers through a job or by living in an older home that was built using materials containing asbestos.

According to studies, there has been evidence suggesting family members of workers heavily exposed to asbestos are also at risk for developing mesothelioma due to the fibers brought in their home. The World Trade Center Health Registry also estimates about 410,000 people were exposed to asbestos and other toxins during the rescue, recovery, and cleanup following the tragic September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of asbestos-related illnesses include:

  • Hoarseness, wheezing or shortness of breath
  • An unrelenting cough that worsens with time
  • Coughed-up fluid (sputum) from the lungs laden with blood
  • Chest tightening or pain
  • Swallowing becomes more difficult
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue or anemia
  • Swelling of the neck or face

It can take anywhere from 10 to 40 years before asbestos-related symptoms appear.
