Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Home  >  Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), can be one of the most painful, catastrophic conditions someone has to endure. Also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) this condition can cause permanent disability because of the extreme amount of pain that it causes. It often affects an extremity such as a leg or an arm. Once afflicted with this syndrome, the symptoms can spread throughout someone’s entire body. While there are some physical signs and symptoms that can lead to a diagnosis of CRPS/RSD, such as mottling of the skin, radiating pain and/or numbness or tingling, the condition is very difficult to diagnose.

Symptoms and Treatment for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

As previously noted, CRPS/RSD is difficult to diagnose. Pain is not the only symptom associated with CRPS. Hair and nail growth in the affected area, color changes in the skin, temperature changes in the skin, and extreme sensitivity are all symptoms that are associated with the malady. Medical studies have found that CRPS/RSD is related to traumatic injury. CRPS/RSD is a treatable condition. Some of the options for treating CRPS and RSD, include injections, spinal cord stimulation, and medication.

Because this condition can be difficult to diagnose, insurance companies and defendants in personal injury cases often attempt to claim that the injured person is faking or exaggerating their symptoms in order to receive compensation. In some cases, the defendants may hire a doctor who will claim that the condition is either misdiagnosed of that it is something far less severe that could easily be cured with proper treatment.
