The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C., is excited to announce that Nazhir Carter has been selected as the winner of our 2020 Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship for Autism!
Nazhir is a recent graduate from The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas, and is an incoming freshman at Prairie View A&M University.
This year we received hundreds of applications from very talented students across the country. Nazhir’s essay – “When The School Bus Ends” – caught our attention. In addition to sharing his story, Nazhir also discussed how students with autism often lack meaningful systems of support as they mature into higher education and adulthood.
By furthering his education, Nazhir hopes to help bridge this gap by partnering with schools, community leaders, and service organizations to develop and create transition programs that help students with autism and disabilities achieve their full potential.
Our team wishes Nazhir the best of luck in his studies, and would like to thank everyone who submitted their essays this year. We will begin accepting submissions for next year’s scholarship in January 2021, and eagerly await the next outstanding crop of applicants.
The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C., created the Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship for Autism in memory of Avonte Oquendo, a 14-year-old boy who tragically passed after wandering away from his NYC school in 2013. Avonte’s story has inspired numerous supporters and lawmakers to pass meaningful legislation to protect other children who suffer from autism and disabilities.
