In New York City, private companies operate taxis and those taxis are licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), which is an arm of the New York City government. The TLC requires all yellow medallion taxis to go through a rigorous inspection process three times per year. These checks include things like making sure the safety features are functioning properly and detecting any leaks or irregularities. One cause for concern is the burgeoning number of boro taxis (green taxis) operating in the City of New York. According to the TLC, they will have to implement “express reinspection” to accommodate the nearly 18,000 new taxis poised to hit the streets in the coming years.
According to the United States Census Bureau, .8% of New York City’s 3,685,786 workers commute to work by bicycle. That’s about 29,486 bicyclists on the streets of New York City on any given day. Bicyclists in New York City are twice as likely to be involved in accidents with taxis than with regular passenger vehicles. Many of these accidents are “dooring” accidents, which happen when a taxi passenger opens their door right into a bicyclist’s path.
The TLC requires that taxi and livery vehicles operating in New York City must maintain a minimum of $100,000/$300,000 of insurance coverage. Insurance would cover, at a minimum, up to $100,000 for an individual and $300,000 total per taxi accident. When injuries are catastrophic, accepting an insurance settlement may not be enough.
