The Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry is a free of charge passenger ferry service operated by the New York City Department of Transportation that runs the 5-mile trip in the New York Harbor between Manhattan and Staten Island 24/7. The eight boats in the fleet carry an estimated 65,000 passengers every day, but their reliability and safety is questionable. The three newest boats, the Guy V. Molinari, the Sen. John J. Marchi, and the Spirit of America had 58 mechanical breakdowns between their maiden voyages in 2008 and 2014.

In a 2014 interview with an anonymous Staten Island Ferry captain, he claimed that the ferries are plagued by poorly performing batteries. Their frequent failures cause one or more of the propeller drives to shut down which can make it impossible to stop or even slow the boats. One of the worst ferry crashes in recent years came in 2003 when the Andrew J. Barberi crashed full-speed into a concrete pier at the St. George ferry terminal, killing 11 people and leaving another 165 injured. The crash was caused when the pilot lost consciousness while at the ship’s controls. City regulations at the time required two pilots be present during docking, but was not enforced by the ferry service’s management.
