New York Auto Accident Lawyer David Perecman Amazed Florida State Tight End Nick O’Leary Not More Injured in Motorcycle Crash

Florida State football player Nick O’Leary was riding his motorcycle down a suburban street when he collided with a Lexus that pulled out in front of his motorcycle. O’Leary slammed into the car, flipped over its hood, and landed nearly 100 feet away, said Fox Sports (7.26.13). Auto accident lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C., said O’Leary was lucky to walk away from the motorcycle accident as he did.

“Because motorcyclists are not protected by a vehicle shell, like the occupants of a car, the injuries suffered can be extensive and very serious,” said Perecman.

Surveillance cameras from a nearby bus caught the accident and viewers of the video can see O’Leary’s bike disintegrating into thousands of pieces after hitting the vehicle. Fox Sports reported that O’Leary walked away from the accident, was treated at a local hospital, and suffered no major injuries.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 34,000 motorcyclists died and approximately 1,222,000 others were treated in hospitals for a motorcycle-related injury between 2001 and 2008, the most recent data available.

Twenty percent of passenger vehicle crashes result in injury or death, while 80 percent of motorcycle crashes do, reported the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In New York there was an annual average of 165 deaths and an average of 4,092 emergency department visits due to motor vehicle traffic-related motorcyclist injuries.

O’Leary is the grandson of golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, reported Fox Sports.

“Drivers and bikers are both responsible for sharing the road safely. Regardless of who is at fault in the accident, the motorcyclist almost always loses,” said Perecman. After the accident, one of O’Leary’s teammates swore off motorcycles, reported Fox Sports.
