NYC is Building Raised Crosswalks to Make Dangerous Intersections Safer

Felt a bump when driving through an intersection lately? It’s possible you were riding through one of the 17 raised crosswalks freshly installed at intersections across New York City.

According to the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), the new crosswalks are constructed at a higher elevation than the roadway to slow down motorists, provide enhanced visibility for pedestrians crossing the street, and increase accessibility for the disabled community.

And while only 17 of the City’s 40,000 intersections currently feature the new raised design, DOT officials have publicly pledged to construct 100 raised crosswalks at curb level every year for the foreseeable future, the NY Times reports. The agency will prioritize raised crossings in pedestrian-heavy areas near schools, playgrounds, parks, and senior centers. It’s also identified several intersections where the raised crosswalks are soon to be installed:

  • Elm Avenue and Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn
  • 69th Place, Juniper Valley Road, and 69th Street in Queens
  • Martha Street and Howard Avenue in Staten Island
  • And E. 158th Street and Cauldwell Avenue in the Bronx

Raised Crosswalks Part of Comprehensive Safety Push

According to city data, 273 people – including 125 pedestrians – were killed in NYC traffic accidents in 2021, the most on record since 2013. In the first two months of 2022, another 37 victims – 20 of whom were pedestrians – were killed in crashes.

By focusing on intersections, the hardest part of the street to design and the most dangerous in terms of injury and death risks, the DOT is hoping to put a stopper on rising fatality rates. Raised crosswalks are an important part of that mission and are one of many safety projects being implemented by the new DOT administration. Other efforts include constructing more miles of protected bike lanes, “hardening” existing bike lanes with concrete barriers, and redesigning 1,000 dangerous intersections and problem spots like parking lots and gas stations.
