The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C. is happy to announce the opening of our 2020 Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship!
Our team is now accepting applications from eligible students attending school in the 2020 Fall Semester – and has increased the scholarship from $1,000 to $5,000!
Established in honor of Avonte Oquendo – a 14-year old autistic boy whose disappearance from his NYC school in 2013 sparked an unprecedented outpouring of support – the scholarship has become a means for our firm to remember Avonte’s legacy, and help hard-working students fund their higher education.
The Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship provides $5,000 to students who:
- Are living with a form of autism or have a close relative diagnosed on the autism spectrum (including Asperger’s); and
- Are currently enrolled in, or have been accepted to, an accredited college, university, or vocational school for undergraduate or post-graduate studies in the United States.
Eligible students must complete an application form, provide a copy of transcripts, and submit an essay on one of three provided prompts. The submission deadline for the 2020 Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship is Friday, July 31, 2020, 11:59 pm EST. Winners will be notified in mid-August.

The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C. is proud to offer its annual scholarship to keep Avonte’s Story alive.
Thanks to incredible efforts made by advocates and lawmakers, Avonte’s legacy has already had a tremendous impact on legislation that addresses wandering behavior among autistic children and provides a means of tracking for parents, teachers, and caregivers. That includes Avonte’s Law, passed in New York City in 2014, and Kevin and Avonte’s Law, which was signed into federal law in March 2018.
