What You Should Know About National Safety Month

The National Safety Council (NSC) celebrates National Safety Month every year, which aims to increase national attention for the leading causes of injuries and fatalities in the country.

Injuries are among the biggest threats to the health and safety of Americans every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), injuries are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of one and 44. An estimated 214,000 people die because of injuries every single year, and approximately 2.8 million people were hospitalized because of injuries in 2015, along with 27.6 million people who received emergency treatment for injuries that same year.

Workers, especially those who work in potentially dangerous places like construction sites, are among the most at-risk groups in the country. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), 5,190 workers were killed on the job in 2016, and more than one out of every five workplace death occurred on a construction site. As part of National Safety Month, the NSC publishes safety materials that highlight different topics each week. These resources can be downloaded from the organization’s website here.
