New York State Police (NYSP) reports that three people were killed in a wrong-way accident late in the evening on Sunday, January 22.
Officials reported that they received a call reporting the crash at approximately 7:45 p.m.
According to officials, the vehicle that caused the wrong-way crash was travelling westbound on Interstate 88 before crossing the median and crashing head-on into a vehicle travelling eastbound on I-88.
The eastbound vehicle was carrying a family of five, a mother, a father, a 19-year-old son and two 12-year-old twin girls. The three children were transported to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, though one of the daughters and the son were in critical condition. Both parents were killed on impact.
“This family was at a family event in Cobleskill,” NYSP Captain Michael Tietz said. “They were traveling home when this happened and by all accounts, they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was reportedly ejected from his vehicle upon impact. He was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital for treatment, but died early on Monday morning.
Police are still unsure as to why the wrong-way driver crossed over the median, but reported that the driver had suffered a medical episode while at work that same day. He was brought to the hospital following the episode, but was released.
