An art gallery in New York was protected from total devastation by a solitary traffic light earlier this week.
According to police reports, a stolen BMW X5 crashed into a Corvette at Broome and Greene streets in SoHo at about 2 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17 before it then crashed into a traffic light. Debris from the impact flew into the Eden Fine Art Gallery’s front door, causing it to shatter. After the crash, the driver of the stolen BMW got out of the car and fled on foot.
“Kind of crazy," commented Amos Frajand, the director of the gallery. "I immediately thought, kind of lucky this pole is here. Because otherwise it would have driven right through that, which would have been bad news.”
According to police, the SUV was stolen earlier in the night in the Township of Berkeley Heights, NJ. A New Jersey State trooper spotted the vehicle speeding down Interstate 78 in Newark, NJ at around 1:50 a.m. The trooper began pursuing the vehicle in an attempt to pull it over, though was unaware that it was stolen until later. They broke off pursuit after the vehicle entered the Holland Tunnel.
The driver of the Corvette suffered minor injuries and was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment.
