Investigators were analyzing the collected evidence from the accident site where Olympic gold medalist and reality TV star Bruce Jenner was in a four-car crash. Driver Kim Howe, 69, died in the accident and seven other people were injured. The crash occurred on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California, reported the New York Daily News (2.17.15).
A final determination of fault has not yet been made, however, surveillance video recovered from a MTA bus could be key to understanding what happened, said the Daily News. Reportedly, the video was shot with multiple cameras by a mass transit bus that was going in the opposite direction as Jenner on February 7.
The New York Daily News citing TMZ reported that the “video clearly shows Jenner’s Cadillac Escalade rear-ending Howe’s white Lexus and sending it into the path of an oncoming Hummer.” Howe does not appear to hit the Prius in front of her, as was originally thought. Jenner hits the Prius before coming to a stop.
The “black boxes” in all four vehicles were also being examined by investigators. A vehicle’s black box, also known as an event data recorder, may allow data on driving behavior and each car’s performance to be recovered. Black boxes serve a valuable forensic function. They collect a variety of data about a moving car, including engine RPM, accelerator pedal position, brake use, air bag deployment and vehicle speed.
In addition to the data from the black box, witnesses can be essential to the understanding of an auto accident. However, witness statements need to be evaluated carefully. Witnesses at the scene of the Jenner crash initially led investigators to report that the Lexus rear-ended the Prius before Jenner hit the Lexus, reported the New York Daily News.
Detectives were expected to know more after California Highway Patrol experts inspect all the vehicles for possible mechanical failure. A visual reconstruction of the accident could also give people a better idea of how the accident happened. Investigators will likely use the evidence to do this. An accident reconstruction expert can help prove a case when there is a dispute regarding fault. The more complicated and controversial the accident, the more important are the services of a reconstruction professional.
