Eighteen people were injured when a swing ride malfunctioned in Norwalk, Conn. during the Oyster Festival. On this ride, seated patrons swing out while the ride spins.
Twelve children and one adult were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to CBS News (9.8.13), the swing ride called the Zumur, apparently lost power. The ride abruptly stopped while its cars were still in midair. The injuries occurred when the riders’ swings began slamming into each other because of the centripetal force. The accident caused some children to crash into the ride itself and other children on the ride.
The ride’s operator shut down the entire ride area at the festival organizer’s request until state inspectors did a complete check.
The Oyster Festival is sponsored by the Norwalk Seaport Association.
Personal injury claims for amusement park accidents
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, thousands of injuries are reported for amusement park rides annually, including deaths. One way to think of amusement park rides is as large machines. Like all machines, they can cause serious injuries to anyone if all safety procedures are not followed or if the safety equipment fails. Amusement park accident injuries can range from very minor to fatal.
Two main causes of amusement park injuries or death are negligence and improper maintenance work, including repairs. Park owner negligence may include failure to maintain the ride machinery, to inspect the ride, to install needed safety measures, and/or to train employees on the safe operation of the ride. General mechanical failures of rides may be the fault of a third party, who may also be held responsible for any injuries linked to their work.
When something goes wrong with an amusement park ride, serious injury and even death can occur.
