Four special needs children between the ages of 5 and 9 were on the bus at the time of the accident.
The driver of the truck claimed the school bus did not stop at the stop sign. When he tried to avoid hitting it, he hit the bus, reported CBS News. The injuries were described as serious, but non-life threatening.
The accident is under investigation.
Auto accidents caused by running stop signs
Many people are injured or killed every year by negligent drivers who run stop signs. These vehicle operators may purposely be hurrying through a stop sign, being reckless, or driving while distracted, not even realizing they are going past a stop sign until it is too late.
Stop signs protect drivers, their passengers, pedestrians and bicyclists. The failure to yield at a stop sign may result in serious injuries, including broken bones, head and/or brain injuries, spinal cord injuries or, even, death. Drives who cause an accident by failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign may be held responsible for injuries and/or property damage.
Stop sign collisions are among the most frequent types of car accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about 787,236 intersection-related crashes occurred in the U.S. in 2008. This number of intersection-related crashes was 40 percent of the estimated 5,811,000 crashes that occurred throughout the year. Approximately 96 percent of those intersection-related crashes had critical reasons attributed to drivers.
Interestingly, drivers 55 and older often cited “inadequate surveillance” and “misjudgment of gap or other’s speed” as the critical reasons for crashes controlled by stop signs. For drivers who were 24-and-younger, “turned with an obstructed view” was a critical reason more than was expected.
Stop sign accidents may result in head-on impact, rear-end collisions, and side impact car crashes.
