A garbage truck collided with a taxi near Times Square. The driver of the cab was critically injured. The cab’s passenger and the truck driver suffered less severe injuries.
A witness quoted in the New York Daily News (10.18.13) said the taxi ran the red light and was struck by the garbage truck. The witness also said that the garbage truck did not look like it was speeding.
The vehicular accident occurred at the intersection of Sixth Ave. and W. 45th St.
Red-light runners and auto accidents
Drivers who do not notice or choose to ignore a red traffic light put other drivers, pedestrians and passengers at risk. The results may be catastrophic and require the injured parties to take action, holding the responsible party accountable for their injuries.
The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) presented statistics estimating that drivers who run red lights are responsible for 165,000 injuries across the United States annually. This translates to an average of seven fatal crashes and over 1000 injury accidents every day at signalized intersections. Half the people who died because of red-light running were not the drivers who ran the signal.
A study released on June 6, 2013 by The National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR) and FocusDriven highlighted the dangers of distracted driving and red-light running. The report said that distracted driving caused 12 percent of red-light violations. The data came from 118 intersections with red-light safety cameras over a three-month period.
New York auto accident lawyer protects rights
Typically, people approaching an intersection with a green light assume that they are safe to go. However, running traffic controls, including red lights, is the most common cause of all urban crashes, quoted FHWA.
Auto accidents involving red-light runners cause serious injuries and, even death. Injuries may include broken bones, head and-or brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries. Victims who have suffered injuries caused by an at-fault driver often have medical expenses, temporary or permanent physical therapy and income loss.
In a worst-case scenario, there is a fatal accident. These are tragic, but even when the at-fault driver dies in the crash, those injured by the driver’s actions may still be eligible for compensation.
If you, or a loved one, have suffered serious personal injury as a result of a scaffold accident, you need an experienced auto accident lawyer who can investigate the facts of the accident for you and work to get you maximum compensation for your injuries.
