"One of the best decisions I had ever made"
- Joseph Lugo
A man was electrocuted May 23 in a farming accident in Woodhull, New York. Dean Farnsworth, 75, was raising the box on his 10-wheel dump truck to connect an auger system to a tractor when the top of the truck box touched an overhead high tension line, reported The Evening Tribune. The contact sent 4,800 volts of electricity charging through the truck.
Farnsworth he was pronounced dead soon after the accident.
The death will likely be declared accidental pending a final report.
Electrocution is one of the leading causes of worker deaths in the U.S. In fact, OSHA reports that electrocution is the second-leading cause for construction worker deaths. Falls are the leading cause.
Workers using tall metal equipment, such as cranes, scaffolds, and metal ladders may come into contact with live overhead power lines, and electrocution can occur in less than a second. The type of voltage, current and duration of the electricity entering a person’s body will determine the severity of injuries sustained.
When discussing worker safety, employers must include the topic of electrocution hazards. An awareness of problems caused by electricity and high power lines could help reduce injuries and fatalities. The importance of avoiding contact with live electrical power sources is critical for employees to know and understand. This includes the minimum clearing distances to stay away from overhead power lines.
If a worker is injured or killed, this can cause a number of financial problems, including high medical bills and income loss. Injured workers or, if a death has occurred, their families, may be entitled to compensation for damages under personal injury law.
