A four-story building being demolished crumbled onto another structure
Six people died and 13 were injured June 5 when a four-story building being demolished in Philadelphia collapsed. The collapse sprayed bricks and other debris through the roof of an adjacent Salvation Army thrift store.
According to CNN, the thrift store was “nearly obliterated” by the falling masonry and debris. The 13 people suffered minor injuries.
The collapse involved an empty building. The thrift shop was on one side. On the other side was a building that had been taken down earlier.
Structural collapse is one type of demolition accident
Building collapses are one of the most serious types of construction accidents that can take place. When one does occur, it is often caused by the negligence of more than one party. In this case, a lack of safeguards may have caused the demolition accident.
Structural collapse caused by improperly secured walls or load-bearing structures is one type of demolition accident.
According to the construction accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm, if any safety measures at a construction site are ignored or equipment malfunctions, a lawsuit may be filed to compensate victims for their injuries and wage loss.
