Two-bus accident injures nearly 30 people
A commuter bus collided with a mini-school bus on January 10 in Old Bridge, New Jersey. The school bus flipped on its side, and nearly 30 passengers in the commuter bus were injured. Only two people, neither of them children, were on the school bus at the time of the accident.
Two people, including the driver of the New York City-bound commuter bus, were reported to be in serious condition.
Apparently, the commuter bus rear-ended the school bus while the school bus was making a right turn. The collision caused the commuter bus to run off the road. It hit a telephone pole before smashing into a large tree.
Broken bones and “facial injuries” were endured, Old Bridge police Capt. Art Carullo said in the New York Post. Nearly every passenger suffered some type of injury.
The accident occurred during morning rush hour on Route 9.
Injury claims for bus accidents
Each day hundreds of thousands of people commute into New York City. This heavy traffic congestion (in addition to high tolls) makes buses an attractive alternative to driving. Unfortunately, heavy traffic can result in an increased chance of being in an accident. Operating a bus on a crowded roadway can be especially hazardous if the driver is not fully alert and focused.
There are many reasons a bus accident can occur, in addition to an unfocused driver. Some of the more common ones include driver fatigue, unsafe lane changes, distracted driving, careless driving, hazardous road conditions, poor mechanical maintenance, and defective parts.
A number of parties may be responsible for a bus crash. They may include the bus company; bus maintenance companies; manufacturers of the bus and/or of its parts; the bus driver; other vehicle drivers; state or local governments, such as cities and counties; and school districts and school boards.
The cost of medical treatment and lost wages can be high for people who were injured in a bus accident. Unfortunately, bus companies and their insurance companies are not often willing to pay these large sums. An experienced bus accident lawyer can ensure that a bus accident case is handled competently and that injured people and/or their families receive the compensation they deserve.
Getting the most compensation following a bus accident
Prompt and thorough investigation of bus accidents is important. A knowledgeable bus accident lawyer knows how to investigate the bus accident and consult with experts who can provide a detailed and complete picture of the incident.
An accident lawyer can also help injured parties and/or their families deal with bus companies and insurance companies. Both companies often try to avoid or delay paying claims. Another company tactic is to offer unreasonable amounts to settle claims.
