NYCDOT Launches Ad Campaign Against Dangerous Driving

NYCDOT Launches Ad Campaign Against Dangerous Driving

A new ad campaign from the New York City Department of Transportation is targeting reckless driving. It will feature family members of accident victims killed by unsafe drivers. The tagline warns “Reckless driving kills.”

The purpose of the campaign is to warn drivers not to behave dangerously behind the wheel, reported the New York Daily News (12.17.13).

One ad features a man holding a photo of his fiancée. He says she was killed while crossing Baychester Avenue in the Bronx and this year would have been another anniversary.

The ads will go up on bus shelters and billboards in areas where dangerous driving is common.

In New York City, there were 274 traffic deaths in 2012, the highest number since 2008, and 148 pedestrians were killed. This year there is expected to be a significant spike in pedestrian deaths, said the New York Daily News.

Reckless driving auto accident injuries and fatalities

A motorist is considered a reckless driver in New York State if he/she “operates a motor vehicle in a selfish, bold or pushy manner, without regard for the rights or safety” of other people or property. In other words, a reckless driver knows that he/she is driving dangerously but makes a choice to do so despite the risk.

Reckless driving causes thousands of car crashes in New York each year, including accidents that result in serious injury and death.

Common examples of reckless driving include:

  • Speeding excessively
  • Tailgating
  • Displaying aggression
  • Weaving through traffic
  • Flashing headlights
  • Failing to yield the right of way
  • Ignoring traffic signs and signals

Reckless driving often leads to tragic consequences. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to reckless drivers in large cities like New York.

New York auto accident lawyer vs. reckless drivers

Reckless drivers who take to the road traveling selfishly and irresponsibly can have a direct effect on the safety of others. Victims of auto accidents caused by dangerous drivers may be left with serious and lasting injuries or require lengthy physical therapy to recover. Individuals who have been injured in an accident involving a reckless driver have legal rights to hold the unsafe driver accountable for their behavior. Families of those who are killed in a reckless driving accident, have the right to seek compensation for their losses, as well.

If you, or a loved one, have been hurt in a car accident involving a reckless driver, you need an experienced auto accident lawyer who can investigate the facts of the accident and work to get you maximum compensation for your injuries.
