A woman fell to her death after a dilapidated balcony railing collapsed. According to the New York Post (8.2.13), 35-year-old Jennifer Rosoff was sitting on the edge of her apartment’s balcony when the railing buckled beneath her and sent her falling backward.
The woman plunged 15 stories and landed on scaffolding on the second floor. She died instantly.
The accident happened at East 57th Street and First Avenue.
New York balcony accidents may result in injury or death
The safety of balconies and balcony railing is very important, especially in New York buildings, where the balconies can be extremely high above ground
More often than not, balcony falls result in severe injuries or fatalities.
Some balcony fall cases are the result of a structural problem with the balcony. A metal balcony railing can have parts that weakened and rusted. Balcony falls may also occur when the allowed safe weight load is not correctly calculated. Balcony railings may be defective or even broken.
When the fall from a balcony was the result of negligence or misconduct by another person or party, the injured victim or the family of a deceased victim may be eligible for financial compensation. If someone is seriously injured or killed in a balcony fall, the owner of the property where the balcony is located is most likely responsible, especially if the railing was in any way defective.
