New York personal injury lawyers mindful of following safety standards
Seven workers died while cleaning a tank at a Mexico City brewery owned by Grupo Modelo, the makers of Corona and other beers. The deaths occurred in “a confined area of a tank in which cleaning and maintenance work was being done,” reported Businessweek, quoting a Modelo spokesperson.
According to Businessweek, the general belief held by the media is that
the workers got trapped inside the tank and inhaled toxic fumes while
they were performing maintenance work.
The fatal accident is still under investigation.
Maintenance contractors made up four of the dead, while the other three were brewery employees. It is likely the Modelo workers died in a rescue attempt, Businessweek said. The deaths were “due to unspecified toxins.”
OSHA guidelines and N.Y. laws protect workers from job-related injuries
In New York and the rest of the United States, specific procedures are required to ensure the safety of employees working in a confined space. Tanks, cisterns, silos, manholes, and other areas with a limited-means entry or exit are examples of confined spaces.
The procedures, as set by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), require that air quality be tested before workers enter any confined spaces. The air must also be monitored continuously while workers are within the space.
Because so many goods manufactured in Mexico come to the U.S., OSHA has
often partnered with Mexico to promote safety and health rights in the
workplace according to U.S. safety standards.
According to OSHA, most workplace accidents are avoidable and can be prevented if proper safety protocols are in place.
