Older Pedestrians More Likely to Die in Traffic Accidents

New York auto accident lawyers wary of risks to seniors

A new government report, appearing in the April 19 issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publication Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, reveals that elderly pedestrians are more likely to be killed in a traffic accident than younger ones, said U.S. News and World Report.

For the study, researchers analyzed U.S. data from 2001-2010. They found that traffic-related death rates for all people aged 75 and older were more than double those of people aged 34 and younger. This conclusion included both men and women.

Traffic crashes in the United States killed 4,280 pedestrians and injured an estimated 70,000 others in 2010, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This averages out to one a pedestrian killed every two hours and injured every eight minutes.

Close to three-fourths of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban centers like New York City, said the NHTSA.

The number of elderly pedestrians killed in the U.S. could even increase given the aging of the nation’s population, said U.S. News.

New York auto accident consequences and prevention

Following a car-pedestrian accident in which the motorist is at fault, the driver may find himself or herself facing a number of civil and criminal consequences depending on the details of the accident. One consequence might be a personal injury lawsuit. Another is a wrongful death lawsuit.

Pedestrians who stay safe and drivers who understand the need to keep their eyes on the road and watch out for older pedestrians can avoid the need to hire an auto accident lawyer.

The government can also help prevent pedestrian deaths. Effective strategies for saving people’s lives include a number of roadway engineering improvements, including installing and/or upgrading crosswalks, sidewalks, and raised medians. Vehicles can also be made to slow down with traffic-calming measures like speed bumps. Police also need to better-enforce speeding, distracted driving, and pedestrian-right-of-way laws.
