"One of the best decisions I had ever made"

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – December 28, 2009 – Construction site deaths fell a gigantic 84 percent from 2008 to 2009, according to recently released numbers from New York City’s Department of Buildings. The final tally lists 19 reported deaths in 2008 and only 3 in 2009, giving hope to New York Construction Accident Lawyers.
Nine of those fatalities were the result of two tragic crane accidents on the East Side of Manhattan.
Considering New York construction, accident lawyers believe the number of fatal accidents fell for two main reasons. One reason is because overall building slowed due to the recession. Two, following the two crane collapses, a stringent review of safety standards ushered in many new regulations.
Stepped-up enforcement and increased oversight are also being cited by New York construction accident lawyers as important factors contributing towards the lower number of deaths as well.
The crane accidents that killed nine workers allowed the Buildings Department to expand their enforcement powers, as well as require more extensive construction worker training.
“They’re moving more and more towards putting construction zone safety ahead of profit and there’s only a positive side to that,” added the New York construction accident lawyer.
However, it should be noted that the number of injuries tallied by the agency went up dramatically, from 178 to 246. The agency attributes this rise to better reporting by contractors, though this is difficult to measure accurately.
In New York, regarding construction accidents, lawyers agree it is too early to say that there will be a substantial decrease in construction deaths this year.
“Importantly, the construction sector must be careful not let these improvements result in a complacent attitude,” said New York construction accident lawyer Perecman.
