A 25-year-old man died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an early morning taxi accident in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens, the Daily News reports. His fiancée, riding in the cab with him, was also badly injured.
Kenneth Forkey and his fiancée, whom police did not identify, were on their way to a 9:10 a.m. flight to Florida out of LaGuardia Airport to visit Mr. Forkey’s parents when their cab, driven by Yugo Gomez, crashed into the back of a truck parked on the Long Island Expressway service road. The trucker, Bob Evans, had pulled over to the side of the road to sleep.
Even for New York auto accident lawyers used to seeing the aftermaths of bad accidents, this one stands out. The entire right side of the cab to the rear passenger door was smashed and ripped open, the roof collapsed. A photo is available in the News story.
Mr. Forkey and his fiancée were rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center after the accident. Mr. Forkey succumbed to his injuries about an hour after being admitted. His fiancée suffered facial injuries and is now in a coma at Elmhurst Hospital.
The police issued the truck driver, Mr. Evans, a summons for illegally parking on the service road.
New York wrongful death lawyers know the inadequate wrongful death laws in this state will prevent Mr. Forkey’s family or fiancée (depending on Mr. Forkey’s will) from ever receiving just compensation for the emotional loss his death caused them. It is an unjust law that engaged New York wrongful death lawyers have been trying to change for years.
We’d like to extend our condolences to Mr. Forkey’s loved ones. We fervently hope his fiancée has a swift recovery.
