New York based vodka entrepreneur Malcolm Lloyd, 42, died in a high-speed car crash in Florida. He was killed when the $400,000 Lamborghini Aventador he was traveling in as a passenger crashed into an SUV waiting at a red light near Miami Beach. The Lamborghini was said to be traveling at speeds of up to 120 mph, according to a report by the Miami Herald (4.25.14). David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, said it is highly unlikely that the driver had justification for driving that fast.
“The sad truth is that many drivers speed simply because they enjoy driving fast or are in a hurry,” said Perecman.
Both drivers involved in the crash were reported to be in a critical but stable condition, said the Miami Herald.
According to the National highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding was a contributing factor in 30 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in 2012. An average of 850 Americans are killed every month in speed-related crashes.
“The higher the speed at impact, the more likely there will be a death, disfigurement, or debilitating injury,” said Perecman. The consequences of auto accidents multiply for every 10 mph over 50 mph that a vehicle travels.
Wrongful death involves the loss of life due to the deliberate, negligent and-or reckless behavior of another person or entity. A wrongful death lawsuit seeks compensation for the survivors’ loss, such as lost wages from the deceased, suffering and funeral expenses.
“When drivers violate speeding laws, they need to be held responsible for any injuries caused as a result of their negligent and reckless actions,” said Perecman.
Lloyd was also known as “Dr. Vodka. He started Old Nassau Imports and sold a vodka brand he created called Double Cross Vodka after getting a medical doctorate from Dartmouth Medical School,” reported the Miami Herald.
