New York Personal Injury Attorneys Stunned When Couple killed in hit-and-run Thanksgiving Eve Tragedy Outside of a Church

Thursday, 03 December 2009

A senseless accident saddens New York personal injury attorney David Perecman as a husband and wife are killed by a man whose driver's license had been suspended at least 29 times since 2006.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - November 30, 2009 -An elderly Staten Island couple were killed in a hit-and-run auto accident as they walked to donate canned goods to a church run Thanksgiving food drive.

The driver, Almir Lekperic allegedly blew a red light. New York personal injury attorney David Perecman notes the added charge, that he fled the scene after the accident. Lekperic also allegedly persuaded his sister, Mirsada Nikezi, to tell the police the white van he had been driving, had been stolen.

Lekperic has a horrific driving record with no less than 29 license suspensions. As reported in The New York Times, Lekperic's previous traffic violations include not wearing his seatbelt, talking on his cellphone while driving, following another car too closely and, also, driving without a license. His license was most recently suspended in September when he failed to answer a summons, according to authorities.

Hit and run drivers are people who have avoided taking responsibility for their actions. It can be considered miraculous Lekperic came back, especially considering his driving record and, now, the charges, agree many New York personal injury attorneys.

By sad coincidence, the intersection where the couple was hit had been a topic of discussion among school and Department of Transportation officials just hours before the accident. At the meeting, officials proposed installing a red-light camera at that exact juncture in the road.

"I am all for the red light cameras if they will make the streets safer in New York City," personal injury attorney Perecman said.

Lekperic had his change of heart on the day of Thanksgiving, when he turned himself in to authorities, admitting his role in the hit-and-run. Lekperic is charged with two felony counts of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and one misdemeanor for driving with a suspended license.

"It would be a bigger victory for humanity if people would take personal responsibility for their actions. Technology is an unfortunate substitute for people being counted on to do the right thing," added Perecman. "if people would do the right thing, we wouldn't need, in New York City, personal injury attorneys in such great quantity either."
