New York Lead Poisoning Lawyers

Manhattan and Bronx Child Injury Attorneys

If your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability and you live in a building that was built before 1978, your child may have been exposed to lead in your home. If so, there are steps you can take to both stop the lead poisoning and hold your landlord accountable.

At The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C., our New York lead poisoning attorneys seek money damages for children who have been lead poisoned. Our team of Manhattan-based lawyers represents clients in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island and Westchester.

Our lead attorney, David Perecman, the father of three wonderful children, has been practicing personal injury law in New York for more than 30 years and understands the importance of a safe home for children. If your child has been harmed, contact us today for a free consultation.

Has Your Child Been Exposed to Lead in the Home?

When a building has been painted with lead paint, children are at a high risk of inhaling toxic amounts of lead dust. Small children can also develop a condition called pica that causes them to lick or eat peeling lead paint, which is sweeter than the types of paints used today.

Children who are exposed to large amounts of lead often end up suffering attention deficit disorder (ADD) and other serious learning impairments and cognitive disorders.

If you have any reason to suspect that your child may have been exposed to lead paint or lead dust, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. A treatment called chelation therapy can often reduce the consequences of lead poisoning when it is caught early enough.

You should also make a complaint to the Board of Health, which can send people out to test your apartment and, if they find lead, force your landlord to remove or abate it.

Did Your Landlord Do Enough to Prevent Lead Poisoning?

Before the use of lead paint for residential purposes was banned nationwide in 1978 and in New York City in 1960, it was heavily used in apartment buildings throughout New York City. If you live in a building that was built before those years, your landlord is legally presumed to be on notice that the building was probably painted with lead paint.

Simply painting over lead paint is not enough to prevent lead poisoning. Other paints can peel or get worn down, exposing the lead underneath to the air. Landlords in New York City are required by Local Law 1 to remove lead paint in apartments where children reside.

Our lawyers are dedicated to holding landlords accountable for failing to prevent children from being exposed to lead. Let us put our experience and passion to work for you.
